Nowadays, the United States is one of  nations with highest own-gun rate in the world. While we have such a high own-gun rate, we have the high gun-crime rate. What do our gun laws do about these gun crimes? What is going on for our gun laws?

What Did We Used To Be?

In 1934, the United States passed the first firearm law which was called National Firearm Act (NFA). The NFA required tax on gun and the registration of gun owner, which was a strict gun control law. It aimed to decrease the trade of gun because it caused many gangland criminal problems in that period. For instance, seven men were shot to death by several men who dressed as policemen in St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. The NFA targeted specific gun which included machine guns, and firearm mufflers and silencers. For these types of gun, they were required to have registration of all NFA firearms with the Secretary of the Treasury, which could prevent the crimes of mass shooting. For sure, our gun control law could be so strict. However, this law was failed.

What We Are Today

In the last year, the Congress passed Lawful Interstate Transportation of Firearms Act which is a federal law that allowed people to carry the concealed firearms in a interstate transportation without any report to local state. This is a very dangerous sign for our society. The pass of this means the gun holder can bring the machine-gun and some destructive weapons to another state easier. Of course, it does encourage the potential gun holders who intend to have a mass shooting to implement their plan.

The mass shooting in Las Vegas haven't faded out of our memory. Instead of implementing stricter gun control law, it gets loosened. If we can't have a stricter gun control law before next case of mass shooting, when can we take step to stop it? Maybe the answer will float out when the cumulative gun violence toxicity level of nation reaches a emergency line. Are we close?
